Disabled access: Top 5 Christmas Markets to visit in the UK

Christmas is just round the corner and here at The Ramp People we know you and the family will be looking to buy decorations and stocking fillers for the festive season; as well as enjoy some mulled wine and a mince pie wherever possible!

With our Christmas cheer on the up – we’ve put together a list of the top 5 Christmas Markets in the UK, and given you the disabled wheelchair access guides to the city they’re in so you can find out about the access in advance and plan a day to remember. 

1) Belfast Christmas Continental Market

Voted as the Best Large Specialist Market 2015 by NABMA, visitors can enjoy a fantastic range of authentic continental food, clothing, arts crafts and decorations from across Europe and around the world. Visitors can also see the Titanic Memorial Garden with exhibitions, and the Bobbin Coffee Shop.

  • Monday – Wednesday: 10am – 8pm
  • Thursday – Saturday: 10am – 10pm
  • Sunday: 1pm – 6pm

Disabled Access

  • The venue is situated within the centre of the city.
  • The venue does not have its own car park.
  • There is not a designated drop off point.

2) Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park

Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park has over 100 spectacular rides & attractions, the beautiful Christmas Markets, hundreds of themed bars, restaurants and street food stalls as well as stage shows for all the family. 

Opening Hours

  • Open every day from 10am to 10pm until 3rd January (except Christmas Day). 

Disabled Access

  • The venue does have its own car park.
  • There are accessible toilets within this venue designated for public use.
  • A service called ‘Liberty Drives’ is available which provides free mobility for anyone who finds it difficult to see all 760 acres of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens.
  • Winter Wonderland offer a 2-for-1 Carer / PA ticketing scheme to provide disabled visitors who require full time assistance with a free ticket for a partner, accompanying friend or personal assistant (PA) for all pre-bookable attractions.

3) Birmingham Christmas Market in Victoria Square

Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market and Craft Market (now having run for over a decade) has become a massive favourite with both residents and visitors to the city from all over the UK and Europe. With over 180 stalls, it’s thought to be the largest outdoor Christmas Market in Britain. 

Opening Hours

  • 10am – 9pm every day until Christmas 

Disabled Access

  • Victoria Square, New Street and the whole market can be accessed by wheelchair users, as it’s possible to take a route that avoids steps.
  • Accessible toilet facilities for disabled people are available on site in the area adjacent to the stage on Victoria Square.
  • There is ample parking in the vicinity of the Christmas Market.

4) Glasgow Christmas Market

Residents and shop owners of Glasgow are getting ready to bring the best Chrismas market to the city centre. Visitors can experience festive cheer from twinkly lights, continental and local food, as well as drinking and craft celebrations in the grounds of St Enoch Square.

5) The Christmas Market in Leeds city centre

Millennium Square in Leeds city centre has once again been transformed into a scenic winter village. With over 40 traditional wooden chalet stalls decorated with festive greenery and twinkling colourful lights, the themed indoor venues and the traditional Christmas carousel ride will warm the soul.
