Modular Steps FAQs

We can't find products matching the selection.

What are modular steps used for?

Modular steps are designed to provide safe, convenient access to temporary and modular buildings where permanent steps, such as concrete steps, may not be practical or necessary.

They are particularly useful when a building is only going to be in place for a limited period or may need to be relocated. For example, modular steps can be used with:

  • Construction site offices that are in place during building works
  • Temporary offices used while a permanent office block is being refurbished or constructed
  • Portable toilets and welfare facilities at events or temporary sites
  • Modular classrooms and accommodation where flexible access is required
  • Temporary buildings that may be moved or reconfigured at a later date
  • Decking to provide access to raised areas

Unlike permanent concrete steps, modular step kits can be assembled, dismantled and reconfigured, making them a flexible access solution for changing sites and temporary buildings. The modular design also allows them to be reused later in the year or at alternative sites.

What material are the modular step kits made from?

The modular steps are manufactured from steel.

Freestanding step kits feature a supporting frame that allows the steps to be simply positioned where access is required. They are available with 2, 3 or 4 steps, making them a convenient solution for lower access heights where a permanent installation is not required.

Modular steel step kits must be securely fixed in position before use as they are supported by the building or wall. Their modular design allows them to be configured for a wider range of heights, making them suitable for higher-level access where freestanding step kits are not suitable.

Are The Ramp People's modular steps weather-resistant?

Yes the step kits can be left outside in all weathers.

Are the step kits suitable for those with limited mobility and disabilities?

The step kits are designed to provdie access to buildings rather than being used as a mobility aid. For improving access for those with limited mobility, we would instead recommend viewing our range of wheelchair ramps or mobility steps.

Can the steps be rebuilt to alternative sizes?

Yes, you can remove the treads to reduce the height of the Modular Step Kits. Note, for the freestanding steps you will need to purchase an alternative outer frame when building these at alternative heights.

How do you secure the steps to the ground?

The steps include a pre-drilled hole which is 17cm x 7cm to allow you to fix the steps in position.

Which width steps should I purchase?

We recommend checking the width of the doorway where the steps will be used, the step kit should be at least the same width, if not wider than the doorway. The most popular width is the 800mm wide option.

Do the modular steps require planning permission?

The modular steps are designed as a temporary access solution for use on a short-term basis so, in most instances do not require planning permission. Note, if a temporary building is in place for longer than 28 days planning permission may be required.

What heights are the modular steps available for?

The freestanding kits are suitable for heights up to 680mm. The modular step kits are designed to be used at heights up to 1360mm.

Can the modular steps be moved to another site?

Yes, as the kits are modular you can dismantle them for storage or for use in an alternative location. Note, most of the kits are heavy so we do recommend you dismantle them to allow you to move these to alternative locations.

What is the distance between the rungs?

170mm. Note, there is a 140mm clear gap between the treads.

Do the modular steps have handrails?

No, we do not currently offer handrails for these steps.

How do you assemble the modular step kits?

Please view the instruction guide to learn how to assemble the Freestanding Modular Steps or Modular Step Kits

What tools are required to assemble the modular steps?

To assemble, you will need an adjustable spanner and an 18 mm socket (not provided). Further tools may be required to secure the steps to the ground.

What fixings are required to assemble the modular steps?

The step kits are provided with fixings to assemble the steps. We do not provide the fixings to secure the steps to the ground.
