Wheelchair Ramps with Handrails: Accessibility for All
Providing an accessible solution for all is essential which is why our range of wheelchair ramps with handrails are a popular solution for many. Handrails provide additional support to those with limited mobility, whether you are using a walker or rollator or are risk of falling. Handrails also offer additional safety, especially for ramps which are used at higher heights.
At The Ramp People we offer several wheelchair ramps with handrails including our RollAble Wheelchair Ramp and Wheelchair Ramp Kit with Handrails. Both of these can be used with double handrails, a single handrail or no handrails. For those seeking a more long term access solution, we have Modular Wheelchair Ramp Kits.
Do Wheelchair Ramps Need Handrails?
For portable wheelchair ramps, there are no regulations around whether the ramps should or should not include handrails. Often, individuals purchasing a wheelchair ramp for use with their wheelchair will opt to purchase a ramp without handrails whilst those purchasing a ramp to use with a rollator will often select a ramp with handrails.
Whilst the regulations do not state handrails are required, for businesses, where possible, we do recommend purchasing a ramp with handrails to allow your workplace, shop or building to be as accessible as possible. The Equality Act 2010 requires service providers to make reasonable adjustments for those with disabilities and therefore providing a ramp with handrails will allow you to take an additional step to ensure your property is as accessible as possible. In terms of health and safety, depending on the height you are going up, where the ramp is used in a public area handrails are generally preferable for additional safety.
For permanent fixed wheelchair ramps, such as concrete structures, handrails are required as permanent wheelchair ramps must comply to building regulations.
RollAble Ramp With Handrails
Our RollAble Ramp is available to purchase with double handrails, one handrail or no handrails. This modular access ramp can be used as a portable ramp or can be fixed in place. As it is modular, it can be extended when required, for example, if you move home and require an alternative ramp length or if you wish to achieve a smoother gradient. Below are images sent over by a customer of a 76cm wide RollAble ramp with a single handrail. The ramp has support legs for additional stability.
Wheelchair Ramp With Handrails
Available in 3ft - 12ft, our popular Wheelchair Ramp is available to purchase with or without handrails. This solid aluminium access ramp, which is available in two widths, can be used as a portable ramp or can be fix to the step when required. The ramp is perfect for those seeking a simple access solution to their home, business or event.
If you require a longer access ramp solution, or wish to purchase this ramp but are concerned about storing the ramp, you can connect two of these ramps together with a joining support to create a longer ramp length.
Modular Wheelchair Ramp Kits
At The Ramp People we have a team dedicated to providing customers with advice around Modular Ramps to ensure you find a solution which fits your property and needs. Our modular wheelchair ramps are available in various widths and lengths and can be purchased with or without handrails. Modular wheelchair ramps are generally left in place for several years however, as they are modular they are classed as semi-permanent wheelchair ramps so do not need to comply with building regulations. The ramps are a popular solution for those who are seeking an access solution which can quickly be installed without the need for planning permission or building alterations, and which can be moved when needed, for example if you wish to sell the home or simply undertake building works.
