Who should use a walking stick?
Walking sticks are often beneficial for those recovering from injuries requiring partial weight-bearing through the injured limb, those with reduced balance or strength, those with pain or weakness in the leg, ankle, knee or hip. If you are unsure if a walking stick is the best solution for you we recommend speaking to your GP.
How do you identify the correct height for a walking stick?
Measure the vertical height from the ground to your wrist joint, the walking stick should be set to this height to allow for a slight elbow bend when using the stick. Where you plan to use the stick outside, we suggest measuring with shoes on to check the required height. When using a walking stick the user should be able to maintain an upright posture.
How do you use a walking stick correctly?
If the walking stick is being used due to a weak or painful leg, the walking stick should be held in the hand opposite to that of the weak leg. It is recommended by the NHS that you place the stick forward first, then your weak/painful leg and then your other leg. If you are planning to use a walking stick, we recommend speaking to your doctor or Occupational Therapist for specific guidance on how best to use a walking cane based on your abilities.

A walking stick offers support for those with minor balance issues, those who need a little extra assistance, or those walking short distances. A rollator provides more comprehensive support. It typically includes a seat and backrest, allowing users to rest when needed, and is suitable for longer walks or for those who require additional stability.
Do walking aids qualify for VAT relief?
Yes. Mobility aids such as walking sticks, rollators, and mobility trolleys are eligible for VAT relief in the UK for qualifying individuals and registered charities.
