Is anti-slip nosing and treads a legal requirement?
In line with The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, employers are responsible for ensuring employees and those visiting can walk around the workplace without the risk of slipping. Anti-slip treads and nosing on stairs can be one step companies can take to staying compliant.
Do the UK's Building Regulations require anti-slip stair tread covers and nosing?
Part M and Park K Building Regulations outline various rules around stair treads and nosing in various settings. We recommend you refer to these prior to installing stair treads and nosing. The regulations focus on the requirements for having contrasting nosing, which is clearly visible. The UK's Part M Regulations recommend slip-resistant steps and nosing in some instances.
What colour stair treads or nosing should I purchase?
In line with BS 8300-2:2018, which is referenced by Part M building regulations, contrast as a difference of at least 30 points on the Light Reflectance Value (LRV) scale between the nosing and the surrounding step. For instance, if you have a grey step you may wish to purchase yellow nosing to ensure it is highly visible.
