What is an outrigger pads?

Outrigger pads are designed to provide a stable platform for outriggers.

What is the benefit of using outrigger pads?

Outrigger pads assist to stabilise the machinery, including cranes and work platforms, whilst protecting the ground from damage due to the weight of the machine. They prevent the machinery from sinking into the ground and reduce the risk of vehicle tipping, in turn enhancing health and safety. Most pads are designed to mould to the shape of the ground, making them suitable for use on uneven terrain.

How do outrigger pads work?

Outrigger pads are used to provide reliable support for heavy equipment. They create a stable footing by spreading the load from the stabiliser or outrigger foot across a larger surface area. By allowing the weight to be distributed more evenly, outrigger pads reduce ground pressure and help ensure the equipment or vehicle remains securely supported.

What machinery has outriggers?

Various machinery has outriggers including cranes, crawler cranes, cherry pickers, mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), telehandlers and excavators.

What material are outrigger pads made from?

Outrigger pads are available in various materials, including High-density polyethylene (HDPE), Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE), wood, steel and aluminium.

What is the benefit of using HDPE and UHMWPE pads?

Unlike wooden pads, the HDPE and UHMWPE pads are designed to be resistant to water, oils and chemicals, making them ideal for use in industrial environments. They also do not splinter. Unlike metal pads, the HDPE and UHMWPE pads do not corrode over time.

Why do the pads have an indented circle or square shape?

The recess within the pad is designed to help the stabiliser to stay in the centre of the pad.

What maintenance do outrigger pads require?

The outrigger pads and crane pads should regularly be checked for signs of damage, do not continue to use the pad if damaged. We recommend regularly cleaning the pads to keep them clear of dirt, debries and oil.

What are the legal and health and safety requirements around using outrigger crane pads?

In the UK, the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) require companies to ensure the lifing equipment/work equipment is used safely, crane pads can assist with this. Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), companies are required to regularly inspect and maintain work equipment.

In the work place, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 require employers to provide a safe working environment.

For health and safety on construction sites, The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 should be referred to.

In line with HSE guidance, all lifting equipment, including accessories, must be clearly marked to indicate their safe working load (SWL).

Prior to using crane pads it is recommended a site and ground assessment is undertaken to ensure it is safe to use the pads. For instance, whilst crane pads often can be used on uneven terrain, for extreme slopes and very rough terrain, additional ground preparation is often required.

Delivery time frames

Our deliveries usually take place between 9:00am and 6:00pm, and someone will need to be there to sign for the order. Most of our Next Day Delivery orders (placed before 3:00pm) arrive the following working day, but as much as we try, we can’t always guarantee it. If your order is going out on a pallet, the cut-off time might be a little earlier (usually midday) because of courier collection times. Give us a call or email to double check. If there’s a problem, contact us right away at 01372 569051. For damaged goods, please email a photo to hello@theramppeople.co.uk so we can sort things quickly. We’ll verify your order and arrange prompt delivery of the correct item, along with collection of the original if needed. Refunds or replacements will be processed once we’ve received and checked the returned items.

Faulty items

If your item is faulty or develops a fault, we’ll do everything we can to resolve the issue efficiently. Please refer to our warranty terms in our Terms & Conditions for full details. If the fault is confirmed and the item is within warranty, we’ll arrange a repair or replacement. If you need a quick replacement, we recommend placing a new order - your refund will follow once the faulty item is returned and assessed.

Items that cannot be cancelled or returned

While we aim to be flexible, a few items are non-returnable due to their nature or regulatory requirements.

How to return your item

As the customers, you are responsible for arranging the return of any items to us. You are welcome to use a courier service of your choice; many of our customers find comparison websites such as Parcel2Go helpful for finding competitive delivery rates. We recommend choosing a tracked service for peace of mind and retaining proof of delivery until your return has been fully processed. Unwanted items should be sent back to our address marked 'Returns Department'.

Please download, print and return our completed returns form below and return this along with your item. If you do not have access to a printer, you can simply write the required details out from the form on a piece of paper.

How do ground conditions affect the requirements for outrigger pads?

Different ground types support different amounts of pressure. Soft ground, such as wet soils, have a lower bearing capacity, so the pressure from the outrigger should be spread over a larger area, meaning a larger pad is required. When using an outrigger on firm ground, a smaller pad can generally be used.
