Self‑propelled wheelchairs have large rear wheels fitted with push rims, allowing the user to move and control the wheelchair themselves. They usually also include rear handles and brakes so that a caregiver can assist when needed.
What funding is available for purchasing a wheelchair?
Several funding options may help with the cost of a wheelchair. All wheelchairs qualify for VAT‑exempt purchase for eligible individuals and charities, which can reduce the overall cost. In the UK, you may be able to receive a wheelchair through the NHS by contacting your GP to arrange a wheelchair assessment.
