What is an outrigger pad?

Outrigger pads (also known as stabiliser pads or crane pads) are placed under the feet of outriggers on heavy machinery such as cranes, MEWPs, and telehandlers. They spread the load over a larger surface area, preventing the outrigger from sinking into soft ground and reducing the risk of the machine tipping or becoming unstable.

What are the legal and health and safety requirements around using outrigger crane pads?

In the UK, the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) require companies to ensure the lifting equipment/work equipment is used safely, crane pads can assist with this. Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), companies are required to regularly inspect and maintain work equipment. In the workplace, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 require employers to provide a safe working environment. For health and safety on construction sites, The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 should be referred to.

What machinery and equipment require outrigger pads?

Outrigger pads, also known as spreader plates, are used by machinery and equipment which has a stabiliser. Stabilisers are found on a variety of machinery, including cranes, cherry pickers, mobile elevated platforms (MEWPs), recovery vehicles, aerial platforms with scissor lifts.

Outrigger pads are designed to be used on a wide variety of surfaces, including grass, soil, gravel and tarmac. Many models are flexible and designed to mould to uneven ground.

They are easy to install and provide a safe working environment for heavy equipment with outrigger arms and, in turn protect the ground beneath from the weight of the crane. Crane pads are vital for safety as, without spreading the weight of the crane safely the ground can start to sink which in turn can make the crane unstable.
