Modular Wheelchair Ramps: Accessibility Solutions for Homes & Businesses

Modular Wheelchair Ramps

Accessibility is essential for ensuring homes, workplaces, healthcare facilities, schools, events and public areas are inclusive. The Equality Act requires reasonable steps to be taken to ensure areas are accessible to all whilst new build homes and properties are required to offer step free access in line with Building Regulations (Part M).

Unlike traditional concrete ramps, modular wheelchair ramp systems are designed to be semi-permanent and quicker to install. Whether you need a ramp for a private home, temporary building, commercial premises, or public venue, modular systems provide a safe and durable solution whilst not requiring modifications to the building and often not requiring planning permission. Manufactured from steel or aluminium, they are ideal for outdoor use at homes and commercial sites.

What is a modular wheelchair ramp?

  • A modular wheelchair ramp is a prefabricated access system made from interchangeable sections, platforms, handrails, and support legs. These components can be configured to fit different entrances, heights, and property layouts.
  • Modular ramps can be purchased with or without handrails and can have one or a number of platforms to allow the ramp to fit in the space you have available.
  • Modular ramps are commonly found at homes, residential homes, listed buildings, schools, hospitals, pop-up shops, temporary buildings and more.

What is the benefit of modular ramps compared to concrete ramps?

  • Modular wheelchair ramps are often much faster to install than concrete ramps. They also can be unassembled and removed when needed. This is especially beneficial for those renting a property, those who may wish to move the ramp is building work is required, for instance to access pipes beneath the ground or add an extension, or for those who plan to sell their home in the future and are concerned a concrete ramp may affect the home value. These ramps do not require any modifications to the property. As a result, planning permission is generally not required for these ramps. As they are self-supporting they are often beneficial for listed buildings which cannot have any modifications. As they are classified as semi-permanent, in most instances planning permission is not required.
  • Modular ramps are, as per their name, modular and therefore they can easily be configured to fit your space. Modular ramps can be a simple straight ramp or can include multiple platforms, handrails, steps and more to fit with your needs.
  • As temporary structures, modular wheelchair ramps can also be easily relocated or reconfigured when required. This makes them an ideal solution for seasonal events, temporary buildings, and changing site layouts. For example, businesses or organisations using portable cabins, modular buildings, or event structures can install the ramp when access is needed and remove it afterwards, providing flexible accessibility without permanent construction work.

Where a Modular Ramps Used?

VAT relief is available across all of our mobility aids including wheelchair ramps, threshold ramps, half steps, rollators, wheelchairs. In the UK, people with long-term disabilities do not have to pay VAT on mobility aids. Registered charities also do not have to pay VAT on these items. When you add the item to your basket simply complete your VAT exemption details in the VAT relief box to purchase the ramp without the VAT. It is a self-declaration, we simply require the user's full name and disability. You do not need to send over any paperwork as evidence, nor do you need to be registered as disabled or claim benefits.

What To Measure

1.Height

Measure the vertical height from the ground to where the end of the ramp will rest when in place. If there is also an internal height, for example on uPVC doorways, measure this to.

2.Width

Check the useable width of the doorway to check the space available for the ramp to rest. If the door opens inwards within the doorframe ensure to take this into consideration as it may reduce the space available.

3. Length

Measure from the doorway outwards to check how much space you have available for a ramp. If you have limited space due to a wall, pavement or similar you may need to consider an L-shaped design.

At The Ramp People, we have a dedicated Modular Team available to assist you in finding the right modular ramp for your property. Simply contact our team with measurements and images of the area so we can provide a bespoke for you.

Wheelchair Ramp Gradients

1. The modular access ramps can be built to a maximum of a 1:10 gradient though a 1:12 gradient is recommended. For those seeking a smoother gradient, you can choose a 1:15 gradient.

Safety Features to Look Out For

Capacity

Check the capacity of the ramp is suitable for your wheelchair, mobility scooter or rollator.

Adequate width

It is important the ramp is wide enough for the mobility aid.

Anti-slip surface

Ensure the ramp has a high traction surface, it is also important to ensure it can be used when wet.

Platforms

Platforms are especially beneficial to allow users to take a break when needed or to provide a stable area to remain whilst opening the door.

Handrails

Where users will be walking up the ramp and for higher heights handrails are strongly recommended.

Smooth transitions

A smooth transition on and off of the ramp is essential for the user.

Do Modular WheelchaiRamps Need Planning Permission?

  • In many cases, semi-permanent modular ramps may not require planning permission because they are temporary or removable structures.
  • Listed buildings and buildings in conservation areas may require permission, if you are unsure we recommend speaking to your local council.

Product Questions

How long does it take to install a modular ramp?
Installation time can vary depending on the ramp length and configuration you are purchasing, along with abilities. We recommend speaking to our team to confirm based on your requirements. In general, it does take at least half a day to set up the ramp.
Can I install a modular ramp myself?
We generally recommend that modular ramps are installed by at least two people. Installation can be carried out by a confident DIYer or competent builder. We recommend reviewing the installation video and instructions to determine whether you feel comfortable completing the installation yourself.
I require a wheelchair ramp. Should I choose a modular ramp or a portable folding wheelchair ramp?
This depends on your individual needs and level of mobility support required. Modular ramps are ideal for those looking for a semi-permanent access solution which can be left outside and is suitable for use over months or years. They are typically more stable and can be used independently. Folding wheelchair ramps are a more portable and cost-effective option, often suitable for short-term or occasional use. However, they usually need to be positioned by a carer or helper before use. Folding ramps are generally less expensive than modular systems and are often available for next-day delivery if an urgent solution is needed.
Can modular ramps be used to load trolleys, pallet trucks and similar?
In general, modular ramps should only be used to provide pedestrian and wheelchair access. Loading items with solid wheels, such as trolleys and pallet trucks, could risk damaging the ramps.
