Dog Ramps Buying Guide
Dog ramps are essential for many reasons—whether used as a preventive measure, to help a dog recover from surgery, to assist older dogs getting into the car, or to allow certain breeds easier access to beds and sofas. Breeds such as Dachshunds, Corgis, and Basset Hounds are particularly prone to back problems due to their long spines and short legs, making ramps an important way to protect their joints and prevent injuries.
This guide will walk you through everything you need to know before buying a dog ramp. We’ll explore the pros and cons of each type, highlight the key features to consider, and explain what to look for before making a purchase. Whether you need a compact ramp to help your large dog into the car boot or a sturdy option to let your small dog climb onto the sofa, our guide has you covered.

When are Dog Ramps Beneficial?
Dog ramps, also known as pet ramps, are designed to help dogs, cats, and other animals safely navigate heights. They are commonly used to provide access to cars, sofas, beds, or steps.
Ramps can be useful for dogs of all ages and breeds, from energetic puppies to senior pets. While dogs often jump in and out of cars or onto furniture, repeated jumping over time can cause strain and contribute to joint and spine problems—especially in breeds prone to conditions such as hip dysplasia or arthritis. Using a ramp is a simple way to reduce the risk of these issues.
Ramps are particularly helpful for:
Older or injured dogs: Dogs recovering from illness, surgery, or injuries may struggle to jump. Ramps and steps provide a safe way for them to access cars or furniture without risking further harm.
Dogs on medication: Medications can affect coordination and mobility, making ramps a practical temporary solution after vet visits or treatments.
Owners with lifting limitations: As dogs grow heavier, or an owner is injured or unwell, some owners may no longer feel comfortable lifting them in and out of cars. A ramp eliminates the need for lifting while keeping the dog safe.
High-Risk Breeds: Certain breeds, such as Dachshunds and Basset Hounds, are more prone to spinal injuries like Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) due to their long backs. To reduce strain, owners often provide ramps or small steps around the home to help these dogs safely navigate heights. Large breeds—such as German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, and Old English Sheepdogs—are especially susceptible to hip dysplasia, making joint-friendly precautions and regular monitoring essential.
What To Measure
Measure the vertical height from the ground to the point where the top of the ramp will rest—for example, from the ground to your car boot, bed, or sofa.
Check the width of your dog and, where relevant the useable width of your car boot, bed or sofa.
Check the weight of your dog, all ramps have a maximum capacity so it is important to not exceed this.
Things to consider
A smoother slope will make it easier for your dog so, where space allows you may wish to opt for a longer option.
If the ramp is to be left outside in all weather conditions or stored outside it is important that you select a ramp with an anti-slip weather resistant surface.
Always ensure the useable ramp width is wide enough for your dog. For anxious dogs, wider solutions are often preferable.
Dog ramps come in various designs including folding and telescopic solutions. Consider the storage space available, such as in the cupboard or car boot.
Check the surface type is one you feel your pooch would be comfortable with.
For dogs new to ramps, training treats are usually an essential to build confidence in going up and down.

Assembling, Positioning & Use
- The dog ramps for access to your car boot are quick and easy to use. Simply unfold or unslide the ramp, depending on your chosen design, and rest onto the back of your vehicle. The ramps stay in place due to the base of the ramp resting securely on the ground and the curved rest on connection which sits on the vehicle. The ramp weight and gradient further enhances stability.
- The wooden adjustable ramps for beds and sofas simply require you to unfold the ramp and slot the wooden bar into the relevant notch to allow you to set the ramp at your preferred height. Where space allows, it is better to select a larger ramp and set it to a lower height in order to obtain a gently gradient for your pet.
- Always ensure not to exceed the maximum recommended height the ramp can be used at and maximum capacity.
How to train your dog to use a dog ramp
The amount of training a dog requires to use the ramp will depend their personality and confidence levels. Some will go up a ramp first time whilst others need more time, reassurance and treats to encourage them and built their confidence.
As with all training, patience and positive reinforcement is key
Before using the ramp, let your dog explore and smell the ramp, whether this is on flat ground or at a smooth incline.
For some dogs, you can simply put the ramp in place and use treats or their favourite squeaky toy to encourage them to walk up and down the ramp. For others who are nervous or unsure, we would suggest building confidence overtime.
For example, if you’ve purchased a telescopic ramp for your car boot, begin by using it in your garden. Encourage your dog to use the ramp to overcome a small step. This builds familiarity with the ramp’s surface and structure.
Always reward and praise your dog for each step taken on the ramp. Never force your dog to walk on the ramp as it can create fear, be patient and let them take steps at their own pace.
We understand that some dogs can be cautious, or just a little particular, when it comes to new things. That’s why we offer a 60-day return period, giving you plenty of time to try the ramp at home. If your pup isn’t convinced, you’re welcome to return it.
