EV Cable Protector

EV Cable Protector

  • EV charger cable protectors are designed to protect charging cables from damage and prevent them from becoming a trip hazard. Generally, the cable ramps are produced from rubber and used to protect EV charging cables on driveways, pavements and roads.
  • As of 2026, there are over 2 million fully electric cars in the UK making access to an EV charging point essential for many. At present there are over 121,000 EV charging points across the UK but many still wish to charge their cars from the comfort of their homes.
  • Here at The Ramp People we offer an extensive range of cable protectors including rubber EV cable protectors, perfect for protecting your cables from pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

What Size are EV Charging Cables?

  • The size of EV charging cables can vary so we do recommend checking your cable size prior to ordering a cable protector. In general the diameter of EV charging cables is 12mm - 21mm with the length of the cable being around 5m to 9m in length.

Benefits of Using EV Cable Protectors?

  • Extend Cable Life - Keep your EV charging cables in better condition for longer, saving money in the long run. Protect cables from the elements such as rain, mud and debris and protect your cables from passing vehicle traffic.
  • Improved Safety - Reduce trip hazards by selecting a cable ramp with smooth edges. Low profile cable protector solutions are also available to ensure wheelchairs and mobility scooters can safely overcome cables.
  • Professional - Ensure the area looks tidy and organised, especially beneficial where EV charging points are used in a commercial setting including outside of businesses.
  • Easy to use - Simply put on the floor and snap open the cable protector or open the hinged lid and insert cables. Perfect for temporary or long term use.
  • Reduce liability risk - Reduces trip hazard helping to lower the risk of injuries and associated claims.

Regulations  & Helpful Links

Where cable protectors are used on public roads and pavements, it is important to refer to the Highways Act 1980. The Act states that no person shall fix or place cables over, along or across a highway without the consent of the highway authority.

For cables in the workplace, we recommend referring to the HSE guidance around cable protectors and the importance of ensuring cables are protected to prevent trips.

Protect EV Charging Points

It is important to protect EV charging points from collisions which can lead to costly repairs. This is especially important in public car parks and where the EV chargers are located outside warehouse units, offices and commercial sites and some drivers can reverse too far and hit the EV charging point and, in some instances the building itself.

Rubber wheel stops often a cost-effective solution to protecting EV charging points as they alert drivers when they are approaching the end of the parking bay. The high visibility design also ensures visibility at night. Provided with fixings they are quick and easy to install on concrete and tarmac.

Product Questions

Can I run an EV charging cable across a pavement?
In the UK in most areas, you are not permitted to run an EV charging cable across a public pavement as they can be a trip hazard and can act as an obstruction for those using mobility aids. It is important to check with your local council for guidance in your area.
What are the alternatives to portable EV charging cable protectors?
Many electric vehicle owners need to charge their cars at home but do not have access to a private driveway. In these situations, they may not be permitted to run charging cables across the pavement. Alternative solutions include pavement-integrated cable channels (often referred to as cable gullies) and permanent under-pavement cable installations, which allow charging cables to be routed safely without creating a trip hazard. However, the availability and approval of these solutions vary by location, and homeowners should check with their local council or highway authority before installation.
