Wheelchair Turning Platforms: Access Solutions for Tight Spaces
Wheelchair Turning Platforms
At The Ramp People, we are excited to announce the launch of our new Adjustable Turning Platform, designed for use at heights between 80mm and 185mm.
A wheelchair turning platform provides a safe, level area that allows wheelchair users to change direction before descending a ramp. Whether taking a 90-degree turn, accessing a doorway, or connecting two ramps, a turning platform ensures safe and comfortable manoeuvring.

What is a Wheelchair Turning Platform?
A wheelchair turning platform is a flat, level area which is generally located at the top of a ramp. It is designed to allow users to change direction, for example, take a 90-degree turn. They can also be used to allow users to rest while ascending or descending down the ramp. Platforms are often located in front of doorways and steps to allow users to open doors without needing to roll backwards.
Turning platforms are generally manufactured from aluminium, steel, wood or concrete.
For permanent wheelchair ramps which comply to regulations, ramps are required to have platforms. For temporary ramps, there is not a regulation around having a platform with a portable ramp however in some instances it is beneficial to do so.
When Wheelchair Turning Platforms are Commonly Used
Wheelchair turning platforms are particularly useful where space is limited or where a straight ramp installation is not practical.
They are commonly used:
- At homes where the front door is located on the side and faces onto a wall or fence
- In gardens where users wish to take a turn to access the patio, or where a garden wall prevents a straight ramp
- Outside shops where a straight ramp is not feasible due to a road
- Outside properties to allow users to safely enter or exit the home before ascending / descending down the ramp
- To connect two ramps together where a single long ramp would be too heavy or difficult to store
The Ramp People's Adjustable Turning Platform
At The Ramp People, we are excited to announce our new Adjustable Turning Platform. The platform is available in two stylish designs and can be used at heights between 80mm to 185mm. Perfect for indoor or outdoor use, the British-made platform offers a GRP self-draining anti-slip surface. At 1m x 1m, the turning platform is perfect for providing a safe wheelchair turning circle. The platform offers a durable 800kg capacity and is provided with a comprehensive 2-year warranty.
As with all mobility aids, it is available to purchase VAT exempt.

Safely Connect the Ramps to the Platform
The new turning platform can be used as a portable solution, placed down when needed, or it can be left outside in position, similar to a modular system
Fixings are provided to securely connect the rest on connection of The Ramp People's Folding Wheelchair Ramps or Portable Wheelchair Ramps to the platform.
If you wish to leave the system in place so it can act similar to a modular wheelchair ramp system, the fixings are also compatible with our 720mm wide ramp which can be left outside.

Easily Adjust to Your Preferred Height
The platform can be used without feet at an 80mm height.
The platform is provided with 5 adjustable feet to allow you to set your platform to your preferred height up to 185mm.
If you are having the platform in front of a step, simply adjust the feet to your step height.
The adjustable feet between 105mm - 120mm are self-levelling, ideal for use on uneven ground.
The higher support legs which adjust between 125mm - 185mm have pre-drilled fixing points designed to be secured to the ground, perfect for those seeking to leave the platform in place.

Identifying the Most Suitable Ramp Length
If you are placing the platform in front of a step, adjust the feet to match your step height. Measure the vertical height use our handy ramp length calculator for help choosing the right ramp length.
If you plan to install a ramp leading to the platform and a second ramp from the platform down to ground level, first calculate the total ramp length required based on the full vertical height.
YNext, consider the available space and decide which two ramp lengths will work best with the platform. For example, depending on the space available, you may choose a 2ft ramp and a 4ft ramp. You will then need to determine the correct platform height to ensure both ramps achieve a safe, smooth gradient.
Please contact our team for advice on ramp lengths and recommended step heights in your area.
