Walking Stick FAQs
How do you use a walking stick correctly?
You first need to ensure the stick is set to the correct height. Measure the vertical height from the ground to your wrist joint. Walking sticks and canes should be set to this height to allow for a slight elbow bend when using the stick. Where you plan to use the stick outside, we suggest measuring with shoes on to check the required height. When using a walking stick you should be able to maintain an upright posture. If you are unsure on the best height for you, we recommend speaking to a doctor, Occupational Therapist or physiotherapist for advice. The NHS also have a useful guide on the best way to hold a walking stick.
How do you walk with a walking stick?
You should hold the walking stick in the hand opposite to the sore or injured leg. You should move the walking stick forward first, then your injured or painful leg followed by your other leg.
Should I purchase a walking stick or a rollator?
This does depend on personal conditions and preferences. In many instances, individuals own walking sticks and rollators which is why many rollators are offered with walking stick holders. Walking sticks are generally beneficial for those who require support one side. They take up less space than rollators making them much easier to transport in the car or use when passing through narrow doorways.
Walking frames and rollators offer additional support and stability to users. Rollators also often come with added features such as seats and shopping bags which can be especially beneficial for those who wish to use the walking aid out and about. The seat allows users to sit down when needed and the bag can often help enhance independence by allowing users to easily carry their shopping home.
