Ramp Length & Load Height
It is crucial for you to know your load height to identify which ramp length you require. The load height is the vertical measurement from the ground to where you rest the ramp onto.
Once you have the load height you can use our simple ramp length calculator to identify which ramp length you require, alternatively please contact our team.
Manual Wheelchairs:
Minimum recommended gradient: 1:6
Example: for a 1ft load height you'll need a 6ft long ramp.
Mobility Scooters:
Minimum recommended gradient: 1:8 (Ramp needs to be longer due to the low ground clearance)
Example: for a 1ft load height you'll need an 8ft long ramp.
Certain goods and services for disabled people are zero-rated for VAT, including mobility aids, as long as the customer is eligible and the goods are for domestic or personal use. All of our wheelchair ramps classify as mobility aids and therefore those eligible can purchase these VAT exempt.
Who is eligible?
VAT relief is available for individuals with chronic illnesses and or disabilities. The wheelchair ramp must be for exclusive use by the disabled individual. VAT relief is also available to registered UK charities.
Who is not eligible?
Businesses are not eligible for VAT relief. VAT relief is also not available where the ramp is being purchased for a group of people to use, except for charities. In addition, those with temporary incapacities, such as broken bones, are required to pay the VAT.
How do I claim my VAT back?
At the checkout stage, prior to entering payment details, there is a VAT exemption box. Simply enter the full name of the person the ramp is for and their disability, or the charity name and number, and tick to confirm it is correct. The VAT will then automatically be removed from your purchase.
If you are in any doubt as to whether you are eligible to receive goods or services zero-rated for VAT, please contact our team, consult Notice 701/7 VAT Relief for Disabled People or contact the National Advice Service on 0845 010 9000.
Telescopic Wheelchair Ramps
Why would you choose telescopic wheelchair ramps / channel ramps over a folding wheelchair ramp?
An advantage is that they are much lighter to lift as only one needs to be picked up at a time. They are also much more compact and therefore often easier to transport in the car or store in the home. Due to the width they are also preferable for narrow doorways where a folding ramp may not be suitable.
When would a folding wheelchair ramp be preferable over channel ramps?
When using channel ramps you need to line the wheelchair up with the channels prior to use, some prefer one wide ramp and they find it easier to go up these. When pushing a wheelchair, some find it more difficult when using channel ramps as you have to watch where you are pushing the wheelchair as well as where you are placing your feet when your walking behind the wheelchair. The majority of channel ramps are only suitable for manual wheelchairs, therefore those with walkers, electric wheelchairs and scooters often opt for the folding wheelchair ramps.
Are they suitable for electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters?
Most of them are not, due to the high upstand safety edges these are not suitable for electric wheelchairs or mobility scooters which often have low clearance. However, this range is suitable as they have low profile edges.
Are they easy to store?
As the ramps are telescopic and / or they can go to a very compact size for storage.
Which length of channel ramp should I purchase?
A minimum of a 1:6 gradient is recommended for assisted manual wheelchairs, 1:8 gradient for unassisted wheelchairs. For assistance choosing the right ramp for your steps, please use our Wheelchair Ramp Length Calculator. If you are unsure please contact our team.
What lengths are available?
We offer 4ft to 12ft options in several different styles.
What variations are available?
The majority of our ranges are telescopic (with and without black grip tape) but we do also offer rigid and folding options.
Adjustable Telescopic Channel Ramps 4ft-12ft can be clipped to match your required length, making them perfect for those seeking to use the ramps in a number of locations.
Combination channel ramps can be used as straight ramps or to bridge thresholds.
Can the ramps be used in between the minimum and maximum lengths?
The adjustable channel ramps an be used at any length between the minimum and maximum lengths as the weight on the ramps causes them to flex slightly locking them at the required size. Other channel ramps on our website can only be used at full length, if you are unsure please contact our team.
What are combination channel ramps?
The combination channels can be used as a straight ramp to overcome steps or as a bridge ramp to go up and over a threshold as they have a hinge.
How do they stay on the step?
The ramps curve at the end, which allows them to simply rest on the step. Using the wheelchair ramps at the correct angle, along with the weight of the ramp and user also assists the mobility ramps to stay in position.
How safe are channel ramps?
Channel ramps are safe to use as long as they are used within the recommended capacity and load height. Channel ramps offer safety edges and an anti-slip surface. They also often a curved rest on connection to ensure the ramps sit correctly on the step.
How easy is to use line up the wheelchairs wheels with the channels?
The first few times of using the ramps it will take a few attempts to position correctly, but after a few uses it becomes easier to judge where the ramps need to be placed. Some customers Mark on the floor or door frame with chalk to make it immediately apparent where each ramp needs to be placed.
What is the difference between the economy channel ramps and premium channel ramps?
The economy channel ramps are provided with a 1 year warranty whilst the premium channel ramps offer a 3 year warranty. The premium channel ramps are made in Sweden.
The economy channel ramps are only suitable for manual wheelchairs. The premium range offers low profile channel ramps which are suitable for mobility scooters and electric wheelchairs.
Can I purchase the wheelchair ramps VAT exempt?
Yes, all of our wheelchair ramps can qualify for VAT exemption. VAT exemption is available if you are disabled or you are purchasing on behalf of someone on is disabled, for example a friend or family member. Charities can also purchase VAT exempt. At the checkout stage there is a VAT exemption box, we simply require the name of the person the ramp is for and disability. If this is for a charity, please provide the charity name and charity number.
